Relax and routes
Around Zasele village, where also is situated Bojilovo tourist complex, you can find many natural and historical landmarks. In this area one can discover some of most captivating natural formations in Bulgaria.
Iskar River
Iskar River, which is Bulgaria’s longest one, originates in Rila Mountain and goes north, crossing Balkan Mountain Range through phenomenal rock patterns carved over the centuries. Following the curves of the river, just after exiting Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, the traveler is submersed within the unmatchable surroundings, hidden among rocks and foliage, of the Iskar Gorge. After every turn of the road, the traveler uncovers more and more natural wonders. If you slow down, you could even spot a waterfall.
The Skaklja Waterfall
The Skaklja Waterfall, known as one of the highest in Bulgaria, is located on your way up to Zasele village. Reaching the top, among lushly centuries-old oak and beech-tree forests and wide-spreading succulent meadows and glades, on the edge of the sheer cliff, right above the waterfall, before your eyes are stretching the folds of the entire western Balkan Mountain Range (Stara Planina).
Temnata Dupka (The Dark Hollow)
Here is the paradise for cave and caverns explorers. You can see one of the most beautiful vertical caves called Elata. Also in the area are many others, like Dushnika, Kacite, Majanica, but the most famous and interesting one is so-called Temnata Dupka (The Dark Hollow) in the direction of Lakatnik Rock formations (a national preserve with the most diverse fauna in Bulgaria). In the area there are also many other smaller or unexplored caves for those that are fond of or devoted to caving or speleology.
Djuglata
On your way to Zasele, just before Tzerovo village, don’t miss to look at the rock phenomena, known as Djuglata. And if you travel during the winter, you could enjoy by the road the sight of the many amazing ice falls.
Monastery Sedemte prestola (The seven Thrones)
The region has preserved the memory of long passed times within some nearby monasteries. One of the oldest and most unique monasteries is Sedemte Prestola (The Seven Thrones); down the Iskar River is situated Cherepish Monastery; the third one is Iskretz Monastery.
